CINDYTALK
Gordon Sharp AKA Cindytalk. Somewhat obscure these days, his contribution to popular culture is already the stuff of legend, having appeared on various This Mortal Coil releases and a John Peel session with The Cocteau Twins. Gordon will perform at the piano for this concert at Cafe OTO, "Quiet in presentation and frightfully polite ...Sharp's lyrical ennui and fragile vibrato works perfectly within such intimate surroundings. Melodies interweave and disintegrate just as you begin to feel safely esconced within them. The condensed nature of their performance is mesmeric, both loose and scholarly. When they leave the stage, the music hangs in the air and you want to inhale it, lest it decide to leave you again." Music OHM Matt Cosell Meltdown Live Review
JULIA KENT
After years spent touring and recording with other artists and groups, most notably cello-rock pioneers Rasputina and Antony and the Johnsons, Canadian-born, New York City-based Julia Kent found her own voice. "The short, churning rhythmic loops underpin so many of these pieces act like an anchor, these ostinati counteracting the melody line’s desire to take the piece into different landscapes. The more you listen, the more it begins to feel like, despite first impressions, this is less a record about the physical border between the city and the country, and more one about a mental border." (r) aka Italian artist Fabrizio Palumbo's album released last month on Tin Angel Records (home to Trumpets of Death). "Palumbo’s voice adds a real sinister unnerving quality (it’s low like Johnny Cash low) but it is used only sparingly as (r)’s music is primarily instrumental. The musicianship is hugely impressive as Palumbo draws both volcanic eruptions of sound from his guitar which envelop everything and delicate sustained notes which serve to underpin the electronic glitches and pulses."
